Paul’s contest got me thinking again about what I want for Christmas.
I always do my best thinking on this topic way to close to Christmas for it to make much difference — my family is typically done with shopping and often pissed at me for having made picking a present for me so hard. The only reason that I can come up with for procrastinating this so long is that I am in a service industry where everyone wants to push everything out before everyone else takes vacation — and that means that my early December is wicked-busy. This year was no exception. Today is day 2 of my vacation — I was so busy the first half of this month that I needed the entire first day to decompress.
So now I sit — in a quiet house (not totally quiet, Airtunes is playing Sarah McLachian right now — recent tracks). Paula and my two girls are out on a play-date and it’s just me and the laptop — ah, the life.
What more could I want?
Iced espresso sits nearby in a nearly polished off state — yummy. Beans are from Barefoot (thanks for the recommendation Adam)…Machine is a Bezzera BZ02S (thanks for the recommendation Greg). Again, what more could I want?
All I can come up with is good food and good friends.
That’s what I want. If someone wants to get me a gift, they can buy me two tickets to the 2007 Outstanding in the Field dinner at Live Earth Farm. But alas, that dinner hasn’t even been announced yet. [Side note to the OiTF folks: If you get the first couple of your events for the next year on your schedule before Christmas, I know at least two tickets that would be purchased as a Christmas present.]
Of course, there are all the so-called “service gifts” — extra years on my Audible account, Flickr Pro account, Mediatemple (mt) account, NYTimes Select account, GoDaddy certificates, etc. But those aren’t all that “fun” as gifts….I actually USE all those.
So what do I really want for Christmas? The comment I just left on Paul’s blog included a quip about “world peace.”
But, you know? That wouldn’t be too bad of a gift. Peace in Iraq, Congo, Darfur, Palestine, Lebanon, Afghanistan.
What do I want for Christmas? I want justice for all. I want a strong roof, a warm bed and a healthy/hearty meal for everyone.
Would I give up my house, my job, my fancy new computer, my espresso machine, my OiTF dinners…all my so-called “possessions” and “privileges” for world peace?
No more killing, no more hunger, no more injustice.
Would I give up all I have for that Christmas present?
Yeah. In a heartbeat.
Happy Holidays to all and Peace on Earth.
