There is just not enough time to do this post justice. So I will simply put up the facts and get back to this later (when presumably, I will have more time).
South Dakota just passed HB 1215 — “The Women’s Health and Human Life Protection Act”. You can get a copy here or here. I got the “human life protection” part. I missed the “women’s health” part. Maybe someone could point it out to me.
So what is this, you ask? It’s a swing for the fences.
It’s a direct attack on Roe v. Wade. There’s no weaseling out of this one for the US Supreme Court.
This law will be overturned and it will be appealed.
I point out a few particulars in the statute:
1. Life begins at conception.
2. It’s a Class 5 felony to perform a procedure or prescribe a medication that causes an abortion (I have NO idea what “Class 5″ means, but no felony is a good felony).
3. Only one exception — the pregnacy must cause the mother’s death to justify an abortion — no exception for rape or incest and no exception for health of the mother, or for permanent injury, or for anything else that is shy of death.
It looks like it’s going to be a lively first inning.
